10 New Year Resolutions for Strategic HCM

new year 2009 2010   Following on from my last post, here are 5 things I’m going to be doing this year to try to make this blog even more valuable for you (and by doing this, also increase my influence, and support the transformation of HR).

1: Content

I’m going to continue to promote and explain the benefits of HCM and HR 2.0 (social capital) oriented approaches to people management and organisation development.

I’ll cover a lot more around more general people management approaches too.  But I hope there will still be a focus on being strategic, creating impact, taking accountability etc in just about everything I write.

I’m going to do this without any noticeable increase in the amount of advertising etc (there may actually be less! – Google Adwords are currently blocking me for unusual clicking activities on my account - whatever this is about).

However, you may have noticed that I am after sponsorship for my blog.  This may not happen, but even if it does, I’m still going to be posting on interesting things even if they’re sponsored!, and all posts will still be written and posted by me.  I’ll make sure you can see very clearly which posts are being sponsored, and I’ll ensure the proportion of sponsored posts is kept very low (certainly never more than 5% of the overall total).

Sound OK?

2: Commitment

I’ve been making a bit of a habit of committing to post on certain things and not doing so, and starting off series on particular topics and then not completing them.

I guess to some extent, this is just part of blogging.  It’s a real-time medium, so plans are bound to be overtaken by events as situations change.  And it’s not as if it’s the major part of my job, so I do sometimes struggle to fit things in.

But I do want to put more focus on following-through on my commitments.

So one of the things I’m going to be doing, quite soon, is picking up and continuing with a couple of series I began last, or the previous(!), year:

3: Media (Video)

As well as reading this and my other blog, you can listen to my audio recordings - mainly on Blogtalkradio with Talking HR (the podcast show I co-host with Krishna De in Ireland) - but I’ve also done a very limited amount of experimentation with Audioboo and Ipadio which I want to expand and continue.

But this year, I want to do a lot more video.  I think video is one of the most powerful forms of social media (in fact, we talked about its use on Talking HR last year).  But so far, I’ve done very little videoing (other than my family) and have published even less.

So from now on, you’re going to see a lot more video included in my posts.  I may even still get to make a contribution to Bill Boorman’s continuing video based HR carnival

4: Personal

As well as providing content focusing on strategic HCM, I’m going to provide you more insight into me.  I know this is something most blogs do quite a lot of (providing insight about the particular blogger – not about me necessarily!), and – with the exception of where I’m going and events I’m doing (together with the odd introspection like this) – I tend not to do.

I’m still not going to write about client work – I don’t think this is appropriate.  I know most of my clients would actually be quite happy for me to post about them and the work we’re doing, but it doesn’t feel right to me.  And I worry about how client related posts would be perceived by companies that aren’t yet my clients.

But I should be able to post a lot more about what’s going on from me from a work and sometimes personal perspective, that doesn’t involve my client work.

5: Social

Although I think this blog is always going to remain the information providing type of blog, rather than the community building, chat and discuss type of blog, I do want to increase the level of interaction.

After all, the more I understand what you’re thinking, in general, or about what I’ve been writing, the more easily I can respond and provide the value both you and I want to see here.

So I want to include more things like:

  • Reader profiles – is anyone interested in being interviewed or otherwise profiled – who you are, what you think about HCM / HR 2.0 / strategic people management, and why you read this blog?
  • Guest posts from other bloggers, or just others working in the HCM space
  • Your suggestions for what I should be writing.

If you’ve got any thoughts, it would be great to hear from you.  You can leave a comment, or email me at the address at the bottom of this post.  And again, I’m always very grateful for your comments!

6-10: What else?

In the spirit of interaction, I’m hoping you may be able to provide me with some additional resolutions.

What else do you want to see in this blog.  Are there any particular topics you want me to address?  A particular focus you want me to add?, eg more reviews of current issues, or more discussion on other commentators’ perspectives for example.  Better spelling or more humour perhaps?

Just let me know, and I’ll see what I can do!
