2010: The year things change? (Talking HR #023)

Yesterday’s Talking HR show (#023) looked back at 2009 and forward to 2010.  We were joined for part of the show by Alan Whitford of RC Euro:

Listen to the show here (or subscribe on itunes):

I think the major theme of the show (which I hadn’t intended / designed) was that we (or at least I) do think things are going to start to change.  This may be an optimistic hope (to use Alan’s words), but as Tammy Erickson says, ‘changes won’t settle in this year, but they’re coming’.

Perhaps what we need most is some confidence to push the boat out a bit further than we have.  To do, as Chris Ferdinandi says, some amazing things.

Perhaps banks will even change their bonus policies next year!?

Forecasts and predictions

In today’s Talking HR show, Krishna and I are going to be talking about our thoughts on the last year, and our predictions, requirements, resolutions etc for this year.

I know one prediction I want to make, but thought I would check everyone else’s to inform my own thinking too.

Here are some of my favourite lists:

  • DDIs’ list of talent resolutions
    • Expand succession management to talent mobility (great post from Josh Bersin)
    • Quit sacrificing talent (build dual career tracks)
    • Ask more, tell less (I’d suggest we need to build autonomy, not just a perception of this!)
    • Manage your millenials (I’d say build targetted and personalised strategies)
    • Vaccinate for growth (they say growth won’t happen because we have great HR programmes – I say it will if we have great Human Capital!)
    • Walk the talk (great post from John Hollon)
    • Pull your head out of the sane
    • Repair the reputations of leadership (from Dan McCarthy)
    • Be the love (NO IDEA what this one is about)
    • Live the crisis mindset (I’d say yes, but we need to do more).

  • The Global Human Capital Journal’s predictions (despite it’s name, this has a much broader focus than HCM but I really like its review of opportunities re social media):
    • The economy will continue to be unpredictable
    • Company failures will continue to make headlines
    • Employment for executives will be stagnant
    • Marketing 2.0 will conquer numerous big brands
    • Social business will see mixed results
    • Companies will build social media teams in earnest
    • Changes in social networking platforms
    • Social tech will relentlessly drive rich experience into the cloud
    • More case studies for social business models and tactics (crowdsourcing, community companies, professional amateur collaboration, gaming and virtual worlds)
    • Consumer empowerment
    • Mobility and mobile social networking
    • Video will be increasingly mainstream.

  • Tammy Erickson’s predictions for the way we work
    • Two-job norm
    • Less "off hours" work
    • Competition for discretionary energy
    • More diverse arrangements
    • Transparent, "adult" arrangements — Tammy’s favourite change, and mine too:

      • “My favourite change is the growth in what I like to call "communities of adults" — a philosophy of recasting the employment relationship from one of paternalistic care to adult choice. A simple example is offering a menu of benefit options and letting employees choose those that work best. Further along the spectrum would include encouraging employees to "own" their own feedback process or even set their own compensation levels. These sorts of changes won't settle in this year, but they're coming. I expect we'll see more examples as the year progresses.”

Mmmm.  Still not yet sure what my top three are going to be though…

HR+ podcasts

One of the other things I committed to do last year was to provide an update on my favourite not-just-HR podcasts, ie all the good ones I listen to which I thought were too general to go on my HR podcast list (check this out too!) - and which I’d suggest a strategic HCM practitioner or someone in a similar role should be listening to - or watching - as well.

Well, here they are…

Best of Today – there’s nothing better to go with your cornflakes (especially if you’re based in the UK of course)
BNET: The Useful Commute – short useful discussions on workplace and other issues
The Engaging Brand – super! (you’ll also find the show’s host Anna Farmery on the Podcast Sisters, with my co-host on Talking HR, Krishna De)
Evolutionary Provocateur – interesting and unusual insights
FIR: For Immediate Release – great info on communication and social media
Great Work Interviews – some amazing conversations with Michael Bungay Stanier
Listen to Lucy – my highlight of the week (at least it was until the return of Martin Lukes)
Peter Day Peter Day’s World of Business (recommended very strongly by David Shepherd at XpertHR)

RSA Events – for when I can’t get there in person
Talking HR – OK, I know I included this on my HR list too, but Krishna and I do try to focus at the HR+ / HCM level too
TED Talks – you know about this, right!
Total Picture Radio – yet more great interviews (with Peter Clayton)
Cranky middle manager Cranky Middle Manager with Wayne Turmell (my interview with Wayne is here

You can also catch Wayne at Working Week

There are a few others I listen to regularly as well (Business Week – Behind this week’s cover story, The Economist – The week ahead, Harvard Business Ideacast, etc, but the ones above are a good start).

Video carnival

OK, so here’s the video I did for Bill Boorman’s special New Year video version of the HR Carnival.  Enjoy (the video and the transformation).

You can watch another 69 (!) HR and recruitment blogger videos at Norton Folgate – Bill’s ‘recruiting unblog’.

And I look forward to meeting many of these other bloggers at TRU London 2 in February.

10 New Year Resolutions for Strategic HCM

new year 2009 2010   Following on from my last post, here are 5 things I’m going to be doing this year to try to make this blog even more valuable for you (and by doing this, also increase my influence, and support the transformation of HR).

1: Content

I’m going to continue to promote and explain the benefits of HCM and HR 2.0 (social capital) oriented approaches to people management and organisation development.

I’ll cover a lot more around more general people management approaches too.  But I hope there will still be a focus on being strategic, creating impact, taking accountability etc in just about everything I write.

I’m going to do this without any noticeable increase in the amount of advertising etc (there may actually be less! – Google Adwords are currently blocking me for unusual clicking activities on my account - whatever this is about).

However, you may have noticed that I am after sponsorship for my blog.  This may not happen, but even if it does, I’m still going to be posting on interesting things even if they’re sponsored!, and all posts will still be written and posted by me.  I’ll make sure you can see very clearly which posts are being sponsored, and I’ll ensure the proportion of sponsored posts is kept very low (certainly never more than 5% of the overall total).

Sound OK?

2: Commitment

I’ve been making a bit of a habit of committing to post on certain things and not doing so, and starting off series on particular topics and then not completing them.

I guess to some extent, this is just part of blogging.  It’s a real-time medium, so plans are bound to be overtaken by events as situations change.  And it’s not as if it’s the major part of my job, so I do sometimes struggle to fit things in.

But I do want to put more focus on following-through on my commitments.

So one of the things I’m going to be doing, quite soon, is picking up and continuing with a couple of series I began last, or the previous(!), year:

3: Media (Video)

As well as reading this and my other blog, you can listen to my audio recordings - mainly on Blogtalkradio with Talking HR (the podcast show I co-host with Krishna De in Ireland) - but I’ve also done a very limited amount of experimentation with Audioboo and Ipadio which I want to expand and continue.

But this year, I want to do a lot more video.  I think video is one of the most powerful forms of social media (in fact, we talked about its use on Talking HR last year).  But so far, I’ve done very little videoing (other than my family) and have published even less.

So from now on, you’re going to see a lot more video included in my posts.  I may even still get to make a contribution to Bill Boorman’s continuing video based HR carnival

4: Personal

As well as providing content focusing on strategic HCM, I’m going to provide you more insight into me.  I know this is something most blogs do quite a lot of (providing insight about the particular blogger – not about me necessarily!), and – with the exception of where I’m going and events I’m doing (together with the odd introspection like this) – I tend not to do.

I’m still not going to write about client work – I don’t think this is appropriate.  I know most of my clients would actually be quite happy for me to post about them and the work we’re doing, but it doesn’t feel right to me.  And I worry about how client related posts would be perceived by companies that aren’t yet my clients.

But I should be able to post a lot more about what’s going on from me from a work and sometimes personal perspective, that doesn’t involve my client work.

5: Social

Although I think this blog is always going to remain the information providing type of blog, rather than the community building, chat and discuss type of blog, I do want to increase the level of interaction.

After all, the more I understand what you’re thinking, in general, or about what I’ve been writing, the more easily I can respond and provide the value both you and I want to see here.

So I want to include more things like:

  • Reader profiles – is anyone interested in being interviewed or otherwise profiled – who you are, what you think about HCM / HR 2.0 / strategic people management, and why you read this blog?
  • Guest posts from other bloggers, or just others working in the HCM space
  • Your suggestions for what I should be writing.

If you’ve got any thoughts, it would be great to hear from you.  You can leave a comment, or email me at the address at the bottom of this post.  And again, I’m always very grateful for your comments!

6-10: What else?

In the spirit of interaction, I’m hoping you may be able to provide me with some additional resolutions.

What else do you want to see in this blog.  Are there any particular topics you want me to address?  A particular focus you want me to add?, eg more reviews of current issues, or more discussion on other commentators’ perspectives for example.  Better spelling or more humour perhaps?

Just let me know, and I’ll see what I can do!

Jon.

More on HR Influencing

CVtweet   One of my last posts of last year noted my selection as one of the top 25 online influencers in HR.

I also meant to note why I was pleased to be included in this list.

Looking at the list of people who have been included, I am not the most connected or most social (I don’t tend to get that many comments on this blog for example, and don’t often comment on other people’s) and I’m not the most interested or able in the use of social media.

What I think I do have compared to some of the people on this list is a very clear view about how HR can be different.

Don’t get me wrong – I recognise that all 25 influencers have a clear point of view either on the whole of HR or within their own areas – it’s very difficult for anyone to blog successfully unless they have a POV which allows them to be opinionated and passionate about their perspectives.

But what I provide in addition is a clear and coherent theory about how HR can be more strategic, have more impact and gain more credibility.  This is based on:

  • The need to create value
  • The role of organisational capability
  • Use of the HCM value triangle and value chain
  • HR’s role as a strategic partner.

These ideas are discussed in detail in my book and underpin all my posting here.  However, I’ve never really outlined them in detail in my blog.  During the rest of January, I’m going to post on these basic HCM concepts (as well as other topics) and show how they fit together to provide a unified theory of HCM.  I’ll also emphasise why some of these ideas are very different to those in the prevailing mindset of HR.

During the rest of the year, I’ll continue to post on various applications of, and practical experiences in the use of, this theory.

And I’ll also try to further increase my influence by becoming more connected, commenting on other people's blogs etc, and extending my interest in other social media applications (and just to note, I do really value all the comments I receive here).  Maybe I’ll even be able to get on some other most influential lists as well?

But the real reason I’m seeking to increase my influence, and why I’m pleased with the influence I already have, is that I do honestly and passionately believe that HCM can make a big difference to HR’s efficacy and effectiveness.  And if I’m developing more influence, then hopefully more of my ideas about HCM are being picked up and are helping in the ongoing transformation of HR.

Here’s to 2010 being a transformational year for us all!

One more for 2010 - TRU London

TRU I enjoyed speaking with Bill Boorman and his other guests yesterday.

And I also look forward to speaking to many of them again at Bill’s second HR and recruitment unconference, TRU London 2, where I’ll be one of Bill’s track leaders, early next year.

Bill describes the format of the unconference as:

“An unconference is an event that has no fixed structure and only two rules, no power point and no presentations. The day is split in to sessions during which a series of ‘tracks’ run on a theme with a track leader hosting the discussion, debate and learning. The discussion takes a life of its own with attendees bringing their own views, questions and opinions as well as debate. This takes many directions and concludes with real learning and opinion forming. The track leaders have been carefully chosen from their areas of experience and knowledge and the value they can bring to the ‘track’ and have been drawn from across the globe giving a real global view. We will be adding to the list of track leaders right up to the day of the event (and even during it.)

You are actively encouraged to disagree, argue, debate and question, all we ask is that you respect one another. In addition to the published tracks we will be adding to the list by request right up to the day. If you want to add a track just contact us and we will set it up. We will also be encouraging impromptu tracks throughout the day whenever a new subject comes up. An unconference is about what you want to discuss and is not restricted by any fixed agenda.”

I’m particularly pleased to be participating after deciding, maybe incorrectly, that travel time and costs would make attending last year’s HRevolution event in Louisville, Kentucky unproductive, and missing TRU London 1 while I was up at the CIPD conference.

You can learn more at some of the reviews of TRU London 1 earlier this year – eg this blog post and this podcast (although if you listen to the podcast please note there weren’t hundreds of us tweeting from the CIPD conference – only about 8 of us really – we just did a lot of it; we did have fun there too; and this blog was included in several of FOT’s power rankings well before Andy Headworth!).

And you can buy tickets for TRU London 2 here.  Note that ticket prices are well below those of a traditional conference.

If you don’t think travelling to London for this would be productive, I can understand, but you might be wrong (as I think I was about HRevolution).  But no worries, as Bill plans on taking TRU on a world tour as well.

So there you go.  That also wraps up all I have to share with you about my current plans for January and February 2010 too.

A reminder:

There’ll be a few other things too – including trips to Nigeria, Bahrain and back to the UAE (as well as quite a bit of client work coming up), but I’ll let you know about these additional activities next year.

In the meantime, stay tuned for more HCM and HR 2.0 related posts over Christmas and New Year as I’m going to be trying to catch up with some of the things I’ve not managed to post on earlier on.

You’ll have hopefully listened to some of my Talking HR podcast shows, broadcast on Blogtalk radio:

Well later today (6.00pm GMT), I’ll be talking to some hosts of other Blogtakradio HR and recruiting shows about podcasting / the use of Blogtalkradio:

We’ll be addressing:

“Why do they do it? what makes a good show? What shows are memorable from 2009? What works & what doesn't? Call in and ask the hosts anything you want to know about podcasts, radio shows or the subject of their show. Should be lots of talk as the hosts turn guests.”

Do join us if you can (call +1 646 727 3988 - open invite).  Or as per Talking HR, you can listen to the archive after the show:
